HIMSS11 Interoperability Showcase™
Orlando, FL | February 20 – 24, 2011

The HIMSS11 Interoperability Showcase™ was held in Orlando Florida from February 20 – 24 and brought over 100 clinical information systems together to demonstrate standards-based interoperability at the HIMSS11 Annual Conference . These systems –considered competitors of one another in any other environment – worked together to show how patient data can move seamlessly across care settings using standards-based exchanges such as IHE profiles, DIRECT protocols, and other initiatives.

Spanning nearly 40,000 square feet, the Interoperability Showcase demonstrated exciting progress in the way computer systems enable health care providers to pass patient records between locations of care, regardless of their health system affiliation.  Attendees participated in interactive tours that allowed them to see standards-based clinical information system transactions from the perspective of a patient.

Health provider organizations and Health Information Service Providers (HISPs) took center stage in the HIMSS Live Exchange. In this new feature of the Showcase, organizations demonstrated the benefits interoperable clinical information systems have on clinician workflow in their care setting. Connecting successful providers with attendees, the HIMSS11 Live Exchange offered real life experience to physicians who are racing to meet the requirements of Meaningful Use.

Among Showcase demonstrators was a large area led by the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC).  In this area federal agencies such as the Social Security Administration, Department of Defense, and others demonstrated their interoperability initiatives. Major projects such as Direct and CONNECT were represented by organizations who have partnered with the Federal Health Architecture to make health information exchange a reality for providers.

The interoperability Showcase was visited by over 4,000 HIMSS attendees, including several public officials such as Surgeon General, Regina Benjamin, MD, White House Chief Technology Officer, Aneesh Chopra, and National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, David Blumenthal, MD, MPP who commented on the work of the showcase The work of the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase can be summed up in Dr. Blumenthal’s closing remark while speaking to the vendors participating in the Showcase and attendee, “If there is one lasting legacy of our work, I hope it will be the kind of accomplishments that the Interoperability Showcase is demonstrating.”.
