HIMSS15 Annual Conference and Exhibition

April 12th - April 16th , 2015 | Chicago, IL

The HIMSS Interoperability ShowcaseTM in collaboration with Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) is a live demonstration that helps consumers and clinicians understand how using technology can improve workflow and most importantly, safety. This year, attendees walked through over 300 tours of clinical vignettes showcasing the Health Journeys of the Strong family. Each vignette demonstrated multi-faceted medical encounters that use standards-based transactions to get the right information to the right person at the right time.

The HIMSS Interoperability ShowcaseTM is designed to highlight the many areas that interoperability makes an impact today in the world of healthcare IT. Spanning over 34,000 square feet, the central hub of the showcase is a large theater that gives you a glimpse into any of the twenty-two clinical rooms. The dynamic HIMSS Interoperability ShowcaseTM Theater features welcome sessions and kicks off tours to the surrounding vignettes. A second theater features education sessions that give a deep dive explanation of technology application every 30 minutes for the duration of the three day exhibition. Nearly 3,000 people attended the education sessions alone, and are typically standing room only.

The two theaters, surrounded by the twenty-two clinical vignettes, took you on a journey of a family’s many diverse paths through the healthcare continuum. Our family included:

  • Isabella, a mother
  • Robert , a father
  • Jaida , their teenage daughter
  • Jamie, their newborn.

These were designed to take you on a journey through a hospital, physician office, or other care setting. Inside the expansive rooms electronic medical equipment, patient care devices and large monitors showed clinical information systems; all live and running to demonstrate how data flows in the patients’ health journeys. For example, Isabella’s story took us through a delivery room, an outpatient clinic, a diagnosis of cancer and her home where she was able to manger her care. Through our Health Journeys’ they were able to see the importance of interoperability through the perspectives of many different kinds of people, but were also able to feel the impact that health IT can have on an individual’s health care outcome.

Attendees witnessed patient care devices from over 100 large and small technology providers delivering data to a repository which allows clinicians at the point of care view the records. Easy access to complete patient records improves patient safety, clinician workflow, patient outcomes and evidence based clinical decision making.

Visitors to the HIMSS Interoperability ShowcaseTM included Dr. Karen B. DeSalvo, the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Dr. DeSalvo interacted with participants and attendees. Her visit represented a vested interest in achieving nation-wide interoperability and a desire to see improved health outcomes through the use of health IT.

We also welcomed delegations from Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands. These groups focused on the standards provided by IHE and were charmed by the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase’s power to demonstrate the significance of interoperability in the fast paced world of a patient’s health. "Healthcare provider organizations need to invest in understanding the technology behind their clinical information systems,” says Sandy Vance, Senior Director, Interoperability Initiatives at HIMSS, “too often we allow ourselves to be wowed by front end functionality but do not fully consider the impact of the back end technical capabilities or infrastructure. The good news is that “the HIMSS Interoperability ShowcaseTM can help attendees take a solid look at both.”
