HIMSS 2007 Interoperability Showcase—The largest multi-vendor prototype ever built!

The Interoperability Showcase demonstrated multiple health information exchanges using clinical scenarios. These scenarios were focused on clinician and patient access and information sharing across the full continuum of care. The demonstration included real world applications including electronic health records (EHRs) from 51 vendors to the 2007 Interoperability Showcase at HIMSS07, Feb. 25 – March 1 in New Orleans. Illustrating the benefits of managing personal healthcare, HIMSS07 attendees tracked their EHRs through this interactive, 10,000-square-foot exhibit, which featured cutting-edge technology and standards.

The showcase highlighted the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) framework for delivering interoperability across local, regional and national health information networks. IHE is a global initiative that creates the framework for passing vital health information seamlessly—from application to application, system to system and setting to setting—across multiple healthcare enterprises.

“Interoperability is one of the fundamental principles we need to have.  Although we can get some benefit from having Electronic Health Records and Personal Health Records, if there are isolated islands of information they will not allow us to achieve the kinds of improvement and transformation that we can get by having them interoperable and sharing that information.”
