HIMSS13 Interoperability Showcase™

March 4 - 6, 2013 | New Orleans

The HIMSS Interoperability Showcase™ brought together over 150 clinical information systems to demonstrate standards-based interoperability at the HIMSS13 Annual Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, LA, March 4-6, 2013. The sponsoring organizations considered competitors of one another in any other environment worked together to show how patient data can move seamlessly across care settings using standards-based exchanges.

Within the nearly 40,000 square feet, the Interoperability Showcase™ provided live demonstrations focusing ontechnology enabling health care providers to pass patient records between locations of care, regardless of their health system affiliation. Attendees became the patient and watched as their health information was transported across communities of care within the interactive and dynamic use case tours. There were several features in the Interoperability Showcase™.

In the Health Story Project, an initiative that has focused on closed loop referral process improvement, featured six organizations in a use case that helped attendees see solutions that will aid in adopting Meaningful Use Stage II. The Federal Health Architecture hosted a number of regional and state level health information exchanges that were live and exchanging clinical data for attendees to see. Connecting Health IT providers with attendees, the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase™ offered real life experience to physicians and providers who attended the HIMSS Annual Conference.

The Interoperability Showcase™ featured the Financial Network of the Future. The five use cases demonstrated offered attendees a look at the many facets of financial healthcare information exchange within guided tours. The Financial Network of the Future prepared attendees to successfully manage the transition to ICD-10 as well as capitalizing on the extended lockbox and optimum use of electronic funds transfer (EFT) and electronic remittance advice (ERA) data. This demonstration prepared healthcare providers for billing changes with the next phase of meaningful use.

The Interoperability Showcase™ was visited by over 6,000 HIMSS13 attendees, including several public officials such as Marilyn Tavenner, Acting Administrator and Chief Operating Officer of Centers for Medicare and Medicade Services (CMS) and National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Farzad Mostashari, MD. The impact of the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase grows each year as interoperability initiatives from across the globe come together to share their success stories to help the healthcare industry optimize their use of electronic medical records.
